The Code Numbering System

The code numbering system has been designed to have numerical identification to manage large files. The database can be queried with usual identifiers, like HD, HR and so on, but when retrieving data from a reference or for a sample, the identifications will be sometimes coded simply because no acronym is existing for many lists.

Definitions

The following tables present

the basic definitions of the code numbering system
the name code for anonynous cluster identifications
the code attributed to constellation
the code of some usual numbering systems
an index ordered by kind of stars
a list of common acronyms used
a list ordered by authors' name

Structure

The code number has often several fields:

the first one tells simply how to decompose the other digits,
a second one may create subsections,
the next one is usually a key to a reference for the star number,
the next one is the star number in the reference pointed by the key.

Example

The following code 610002154 should be read as 6 1 000 2154.

6 : indicates that we are dealing with small catalogues and lists,
1 : points to catalogues with less than 9999 stars,
000 : is the key to the reference for the numbering, (here the LSS),
2154 : corresponds to star 2154 in the LSS catalogue.
